Preface to the Twenty-Third Revised Edition

A lot of advancement has taken place in the field of technology since the 22nd Edition of this treatise was brought out in 1996. This necessitated thorough revision of the contents of the entire book. While revising it, utmost care has been taken to incorporate the useful suggestions received from our esteemed readers, both from India and abroad, in order to enlarge the scope of the book according to the users requirements.Since the task of revision was gigantic, we have associated the following expert authors in the upgradation of the contents:

1. Dr. S.G. Tarnekar

Professor & Head
Electrical Engineering Department
VNIT, Nagpur

2. Dr. M.K. Khedkar

Department of Electrical Engineering
VNIT, Nagpur

3. Dr. R.S. Sedha

Program Chair, School of Engineering,
Republic Polytechnic, Tanglin Campus,
1 Kay Siang Road, Singapore - 248 922

The portion on Basic Electrical Engineering has been supplemented with a new chapter on “Electrical Energy Generation” and questions set during the last 4-5 years have been added and solutions provided for the benefit of students. Chapters dealing with AC and DC Motors have been expanded with special illustrative examples and recently set questions with answers. A new chapter on “Elements of Electro-mechanical Energy Conversion” has been added for the benefit of students. The chapters concerning Transmission, Distribution and Utilization have been expanded with new chapters on “Rating and Service Capacity” and “Distribution Automation”. Rest of the chapters have been enriched with recent concepts and solved examples.

The portion relating to Electronic Devices and Circuits has been thoroughly revised and updated with the addition of more examples and objective test questions. A new chapter on “OP-AMP and its Applications” has been added to enrich the material. In addition to incorporation of the above mentioned new chapters, the existing chapters have been thoroughly revised and updated. Latest examples and answers to recently set questions have been provided in every chapter. Keeping in view the popularity of this book, we have enliven the material with the use of two colours throughout the book. A new attractive cover design has also been provided. We hope that with the extensive additions and revisions and attractive designing, this revised edition will satisfy the needs of students to a greater extent.
